about

II: Volare is the second movement of the piece Terra Nova, composed by Philippe Paquet in autumn 2021. It was within this piece that the artist began his exploration of polymodality, a process that later led him to develop a unique harmonic system for his more recent compositions. This system, based on the extrapolation of the Lydian mode, gives Volare a sonority that is both airy and tense.

The work is scored for flute, clarinet, string quintet and piano. It was recorded in October 2021. With its slow tempo and vivid imagery, Volare aims to evoke a sense of lightness and weightlessness, while retaining a nuance of anxiety.
